  A World of Understanding 2007-05-28

In the course of life, incomprehensible events and arguments take place between husbands and wives, parents and their children, and friends. At such times, instead of insisting only on what you felt were right in your heart and thought, if you were to put yourself in the other individual's shoes, elements of bickering and disagreement would become comprehensible.
As the cultural background, the extent of education and knowledge, and the type of upbringing varies from one person to the next, shifting of one's heart and position and allowing himself to perceive the events or arguments from the other person's circumstances will enable him to be more understanding and even merciful.
When we come to possess great breadth of mind by which we can first be considerate and adjust ourselves to others, instead of wishing for others to do so first, our lives will be filled with all types of people and thus enriched beyond measure.

"…with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love…" (Ephesians 4:2)
~ from Dr. Jaerock Lee's column "The Way" carried on the daily newspaper, The Hankook Ilbo
