제목 : 페루성회 '큰 영적 부흥의 시작을 맞이하며'
증오가 아니라 사랑으로 만들어진 페루를 위한 새로운 '빛나는 길' 많은 사람들이 한국인들이 주최한 기독교 성회 후 일어난 큰 영적 부흥의 시작을 맞이하고 있다.
페루, 리마 페루의 공산당 게릴라 조직인 '빛나는 길'이란 뜻의 센데로 루민조는 15년간의 전쟁으 로 페루 국토의 대부분에 파괴를 가져왔다.
1970년에 아비마엘 구즈만 레이노소에 의해 전통 마르크스-레닌주의를 표방하는 페루 공산당의 분파 로 만들어진 '빛나는 길'은 1980년 테러조직으로 변하였고 안데스 아야추쵸 지역의 800명의 목사와 3 만명의 기독교인을 포함한 7만 5천명을 살상했다.
1980년대 중반까지 이 조직에는 수천명의 게릴라 병사가 있었고 주로 페루의 지방에서 활동했다. 이 들은 1980년대 후반 도시지역의 테러를 시작했다. 1992년 알베르토 후지모리 대통령을 계엄령을 선포 하고 구즈만을 체포하여 무기징역을 선고했다. 또 이 조직의 중앙위원회 간부들도 대부분 체포하여 게릴라식 기습은 줄었지만 여전히 소규모의 공격인 지속되어졌었다.

매일 저녁 시원한 바람이 공원에 불어주는 동안 페루의 메스티조들, 흑인들, 혼혈족, 인도인 들, 심지어는 일본인과 중국인들까지를 포함하는 여러 민족들이 한 자리에 모여 페루 현지 찬양팀과, 페루 인구의 3분의 2이상의 언어인 스페인어로 아름답게 찬양을 부른 서울에서 온 할렐루야 선교단 과 파워 워십팀의 찬양과 공연에 맞추어 함께 찬양하고 춤을 췄다. (사진: 성회 페루 현지 공연팀)
3일간의 설교제목은 '창조주 하나님', '왜 예수가 우리 구세주가 되시는가?', '성령님의 권능' 이 었 다.
영어와 스페인어로 통역된 설교후, 이재록 박사는 청중들에게 회개할 것과 예수 그리스도께 자신들 의 삶을 드리기를 외쳤다. 아픈 사람들은 몸의 아픈 부분에 손을 얹고 기도 받았고 이재록 박사는 그 들이 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 하나님의 치료의 역사를 체험할 수 있도록 기도했다.
수 천의 치료 받은 사람 중에 실제로 수 백 명의 사람들이 자신들의 휠체어를 밀고 단으로 올라와 걷 고 뛰는 모습을 볼 수 있었다.
성회 시작전, 아픈 곳이 있는 사람들은 한국과 페루의 의사들로 구성된 의료진에게 가서 진단을 받고 기도 받은 후 치료를 받은 경우 다시 의료진에게 돌아가 정말로 치료를 받았는지 의학적인 견지에서 다시 확인을 받았다. 이 일은 초교파적인 세계 기독의사 네트워크에 의해 이루어졌다. 이들은 "전세 계에서 믿음의 기도를 통해 일어나는 기적의 치료역사들을 연구하고 의사 상호간의 협력을 통해 이러 한 역사의 증거자료들을 조사한다"고 하였다.
비둘기가 계속 머물다.
마지막날 밤, 이재록 박사가 등단하기 직전에는 마치 성령께서 수 많은 사람에게 임하실 것 을 예시하기라도 하듯이 아름다운 흰색 비둘기가 갑자기 단으로 날라왔다. 잠시 후, 이재록 박사가 설 교를 하는 동안 비둘기는 강단 앞에 자리를 잡았다. (이재록 목사 어깨에 앉아 떠나지 않는 비둘기)
설교 후, 수 많은 사람들이 간증하기 위해 단으로 몰려오는 동안 비둘기는 이재록박사에게로 가서 그 의 어깨에 앉았다.
TV 방송
팬 아메리카나 TV (채널 5번) 과 글로벌 TV (채널 13번) 은 지속적으로 성회광고 공중파로 내보내주 었고 이재록 박사가 지금까지 전세계에서 인도한 해외성회들에 대한 30분짜리 프로그램을 방영했다. 그리고 이번 성회 실황을 페루전역을 방송했다.
만민TV 김진홍 국장은 "채널 13번은 성회실황을 매일밤 7시부터 10시까지 생중계하였고 성회가 끝 난 직후, 채널 5번은 성회 실황을 한 시간으로 편집하여 녹화방송 했습니다. 또한 세 개의 위성채널 이 성회 전체실황을 전세계로 송출했고 지구 전역의 기독 방송들이 이 신호를 수신하여 자신들의 네 트워크를 통해 방송했습니다. 러시아와 러시아어권 유럽지역을 커버하는 러시아 상트 페테르부르크 의 TKV와 성회를 스페인어로 통역하여 자체 네트워크로 스페인어권 국가들에 방송한 "스페인" 등이 이와 같은 방송국들입니다. 또한 미국의 CTN과 "라 패밀리아 네트워크"도 성회실황을 방송했습니 다."라고 했다.
"라틴 아메리카의 TBN도 라틴 아메리카 전역과 북미, 그리고 유럽에까지 성회 실황을 생중계했고 아르헨티나, 볼리비아, 브라질, 엘살바도르, 에쿠아도르, 콜롬비아, 칠레, 코스타리카, 온두라스, 과테 말라, 니카라과의 기독 TV 방송국들도 성회를 방송했습니다."
만민TV 김진홍 국장은 만민 TV또한 인터넷을 통해 모든 성회 실황을 영어, 스페인어, 한국어, 중국 어, 일본어, 러시아어로 방송했다고 말했다.
철저한 경호
매일 밤 한국인들을 보호하기 위해 또한 성회 중 사고 예방을 위해 철저한 경호와 경비가 이루어졌다.
많은 페루인들은 권총을 가지고 있고 그래서 사고를 예방하기 위해 많은 경호원들이 투입됐고 다행 히 어떤 문제도 발생하지 않았다고 한 관계자는 말했다.
대통령의 환영
이재록 박사는 10월 30일 대통령궁에서 알레한드로 톨레도 페루 대통령의 페루 방문에 대한 환영을 받았다.
만민 월드 미션 책임자인 김진홍 국장은 ANS와의 인터뷰에서 "대통령은 인간의 영적인 측면의 중요 성을 말씀하셨습니다. 그에게는 많은 고뇌와 문제들이 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 대통령은 '기술은 급 속히 발달하고 사람들은 살기에 바쁩니다. 사람은 몸만 있는 것이 아니라 영혼도 있습니다.' 라고 말 하였고 대통령께서는 영적인 삶을 사는 사람과 다른 사람들을 영적인 길로 인도하는 분들을 존경한다 고 하셨습니다."고 했다.
" '저는 기도가 필요합니다.' 라고 정확한 영어로 말씀하셨습니다. 대통령께서는 하늘의 지혜와 능력 을 주셔서 이 나라를 잘 다스림으로 이 나라가 발전하도록, 또한 페루 국민들의 화합을 위하여 기도 를 요청하셨습니다. 그리고 세계평화, 자신과 자신의 가족들을 위해서 기도를 요청하셨습니다. 이재 록 박사님은 요청 받으신 대로 기도해주셨고 하나님의 뜻대로 이 나라를 발전시켜 주시라고 기도하셨 습니다."
매일밤 성회에 페루 여당 총재인 로사 그라시엘라 야나리코 후안카 여사가 참석하기도 하였 다. 둘째날 성회가 끝난후 그녀는 ANS와의 인터뷰에서 "주님의 말씀이 이재록 목사님을 통해 선포되 고 수 많은 권능의 역사들이 일어났습니다. 페루는 이런 점에서 큰 축복을 받았습니다. 이런 권능의 역사들은 예수 그리스도의 영광을 드러내는 것이었고 이 점에 대해 저는 매우 행복합니다."라고 말했 다. (사진: 로사 그라시엘라 야나리코 후안카 여사)
사람들이 어떻게 페루를 위해 기도해야 하느냐는 질문에는 "저희는 사람들이 이 나라의 화합과 평화 를 위해 기도하도록 요청합니다. 지난 10년간 페루에는 많은 부정부패가 있었습니다. 그래서 페루 국 민전체가 가장 좋은 길을 갈 수 있도록 우리의 마음들을 변화시켜 달라는 기도가 필요합니다."
국회의원 루이스 헤이젠 페가라는 성경을 손에 들고 말했다. "이렇게 많은 사람들이 믿음과 구원의 소망을 가지고 이러한 성회에 모인 것은 대단한 것이라고 생각합니다."
그는 또 페루에서 일어났었던 폭력사태에 대해서도 말했다. "많은 폭력사태가 있었기 때문에 페루는 사랑과 영적인 변화가 필요하다는 것을 우리 모두가 알고 있습니다. 물론 이것은 전세계적으로 필요 한 일이기도 합니다."

그는 말했다. "저는 이렇게 많은 권능의 역사들이 나타나는 것을 보고 놀라지 않을 수 없습니다. 어제 는 성회를 TV로 시청했는데 오늘은 직접 보고 있습니다. 이 성회는 페루 전국민에게 큰 영향을 미칠 것입니다. 그들은 기독문화에 대해 그리고 실질적인 신앙으로서의 기독교에 대해 새로운 시각을 갖 게 될 것입니다."
리마는 인구 8백만 명의, 1535년 스페인의 정복자 프란시스코 피자로에 의해 세워진 역사적인 도시이 다. 페루는 총인구는 약 2천8백만 명이다. '리마' 라는 이름은 노란색 꽃을 의미하는 '아이마라' 어의 '리마-리맥' 혹은 '리맥-후에이타', 혹은 '강사' 혹은 '연사'를 의미하는 '퀘추아'어의 '리맥'이라는 단 어 에서 나온 말이다. 이러한 히스패닉 이전의 역사와의 연관성, 또한 식민지배의 역사와 강한 신앙, 그 리고 항상 회색빛인 하늘색에 녹아 들어있는 현대적인 모습과 즐거운 분위기 등으로 인해 리마는 항 상 왕들의 도시가 될 것이다. 그리고 한국의 선교팀은 이번 성회를 통해 이 왕들의 도시에 만왕의 왕 을 따르는 많은 사람들이 나와지기를 기대한다!
리마와 페루 전체는 새로운 '빛나는 길'을 만나게 될 것이다. 그것은 바로 예수 그리스도와 사랑의 혁 명으로 가는 길이다!

A NEW 'SHINING PATH' FOR PERU ? BUT THIS ONE IS OF LOVE, NOT HATE
Many see the start of a large spiritual revival following extraordinary Korean festival in Lima

LIMA, PERU(ANS) -- For 15 violent years, the Shining Path (Sendero Luminso), the Peruvian Communist guerrilla force, officially the Communist party of Peru, caused havoc in much of Peru.
Founded in 1970 by Abimael Guzman Reynoso as an orthodox Marxist-Leninist offshoot of the Peruvian Communist party, the Shining Path turned to terrorism in 1980 leaving some 75,000 dead, including 30,000 Quechua Christians in the Ayachucho area of the Andes and 800 pastors murdered.
By the mid-1980s it had several thousand guerrillas, largely in rural Peru. The group began urban terrorism in the late 1980s. In 1992 President Alberto Fujimori instituted martial law and the subsequent capture and life sentence of Guzman and the jailing of most the organization's central committee diminished their guerrilla raids, but the group persists and has continued its attacks on a smaller scale.
But now, after three incredible days of a miracle healing crusade where several hundred thousand people gathered in Lima's Downtown Campo de Marte Park (December 2-4) for the outreach led by Dr. Lee Jae-Rock, senior pastor of the 80,000-member Manmin Joong-Ang Church in Seoul, South Korea and supported by more than 100 Koreans who had flown in from Seoul, many see the beginning of a new "shining path" ? this one a revolution of love, not hate!
As cool winds swept through the park each evening, a multi-ethnic cross-section of Peruvian life, which included Mestizos (unmixed Europeans), black, mixed-raced, Indians, as well as a few Japanese and Chinese who now live in Peru, sang along and danced to worship music provided by various talented Peruvian worship groups and then later to the beautifully attired Hallelujah Praise Mission and the Power Worship team from Seoul, South Korea, who had learned all of the songs in Spanish, the language spoken by two-thirds of the Peruvian population. After each sermon, Dr. Lee, who was being translated into English and Spanish, asked people to repent and gives their lives over to Jesus Christ. Then, those who were sick were asked to lay their hands on the part of their body that was unwell and, as he prayed for them, to receive God's healing in the name of Jesus Christ for them.
Among the thousands of healings reported, were literarily hundreds that pushed their wheelchairs on stage and then walked and ran about the stage.
Before each service, a medical table was set up for people who were sick to go and be diagnosed by Korean and Peruvian doctors and nurses and then after being prayed for, if they believed they are healed, they went back so that the medics could check out whether the healing had taken place from a medical perspective. This was sponsored by the interdenominational World Christian Doctors Network (WCDN) which says that it "intends to inquire into the true state of miraculous healings occurring through the prayer of faith around the world by gathering and carefully assessing various evidential material in cooperation."
THE DOVE THAT DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE…
On the final night, just before Dr. Lee got up to preach, as if a foretaste of what was to come as the Holy Spirit descended on so many, a lovely white dove suddenly landed on the platform and, after a while, nestled in front of the podium as the Korean preached. Later, it joined Dr. Lee and it sat on his shoulder as scores had invaded the stage to testify to their healings.
TV COVERAGE
The two TV channels of Pan Americana TV (Channel 5), and Global TV (Channel 13), which had been airing spots about the festival and also a 30 minute program about Dr. Lee's previous crusades in different parts of the world, then helped to extend the meetings across the country
Said Johnny Kim, "Channel 13 broadcast live the whole event each night from 7-10 PM and right after it was over, Channel 5 then aired edited parts in a one-hour program. Also, there were three satellite channels transmitting the whole program to the world and many of Christian communicators around the world distributed these signals after downloading it from the satellites through their networks. They included TKV in St. Petersburg, which covers Russia and the Russian-speaking countries in Europe, and also Spain who translated the preaching into Spanish and covered Spanish-speaking countries through their own network. It also was transmitted by CTN and the La Familia network in the United States.
"The representative of TBN in Latin America also was able to broadcast live the whole event to Latin America, North America and even Europe, as well as Christian TV networks in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, El Salvador, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua."
Kim added that Manmin TV also web cast each night the services in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese French and Russian.
TIGHT SECURITY
There was tight security each night that was there to not only protect the Korean entourage but also the prevent trouble at the event.
"Many people in Peru carry pistols, so the security men were there to make sure there wasn't trouble," said a source. "Fortunately, there weren't any problems!"
PRESIDENTIAL WELCOME
Dr. Lee was welcomed to Peru during a visit he made to see President Alejandro Toledo at the presidential palace (Palacia de Gobierno) on October 30.
Johnny Kim, international director of Manmin World Missions, who attended the meeting, told ANS, "The president mentioned about the significance of the spiritual side of the human being. He seemed to have lots of problems and difficulties. He told us, 'Technology has developed so rapidly; we are too busy to live now. Man consists not only of flesh, but also the spirit.' He then went on to say that he respected the people who are interested in the spiritual life and helped the people to come to that life.
"'I need prayer,' he said in perfect English. The president asked for heavenly wisdom and understanding to govern the country so it can be developed and also for 'the reconciliation of our people here in Peru.' He also asked for prayer for the peoce of the world and for his health and for his family members. So Dr. Lee prayed exactly what he asked and then prayed for God to develop the country according to God's will."
On the stage for the meetings each night was Rosa Graciela Yanarico Huanca, the president of the majority party in Peru. At the end of the second service, she told ANS, "Peru is very blessed to have the presentation of the Word of the Lord by Pastor Lee and also to be able to witness the many miracles we have seen. These miracles are for the glory of Jesus Christ and I am very happy for this." (Pictured: Rosa Graciela Yanarico Huanca).
When asked how people could pray for her country, she replied, "We ask people to pray for unity and peace in our country. For the last ten years, the corruption has been frequent in Peru and I ask for prayer that the Lord would change the hearts for the best of all of the people here."
Congressman Luis Heysen Fegarra, who was holding a Bible, then said, "I think it is wonderful to see this meeting of people with a great lot of faith and a great hope of being saved."
He then spoke about the violence there has been in the country. "Because there has been so much violence here, we know that that Peru needs love and the people need a spiritual conversion. Of course, this is also needed in all parts of the world."
On the second night of the crusade, Pastor Julio Romero, Pastor of the Community of Faith Church in Lima, and the recent Luis Palau festival also in the same park in Lima a few weeks previously, stood smiling as he watched the huge numbers of people who were testifying on-stage to their healing. "I am impressed by the large number of miracles I am watching," he said. "Yesterday, I watched on television and tonight I see it in person. This will have a great impact on the whole population of Peru because they will have another idea of the Christian culture and the Christians as another option of faith."
Lima, which has about 8 million residents, is a historic city that was founded in 1535 by Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro. Peru has a total population of about 28 million. Lima's name comes from the "aymara" word lima-limac or limac-huayta, the name of a yellow flower; or from the Quechua "rimac" meaning "speaker." Because of these links with the pre-Hispanic past, its colonial past and the strong religious faith it gave the city; its modern outlook and its festive nature, which bathes its eternally gray sky in color, Lima, will always be the City of the Kings and the Korean Christians hope that the crusade will now see many in the City of Kings now following the King of Kings!
Lima, as well as the whole of Peru, will surely now have a new "shining path" ? to Jesus Christ, the loving revolutionary!

만민TV 김진홍 국장은 "채널 13번은 성회실황을 매일밤 7시부터 10시까지 생중계하였고 성회가 끝 난 직후, 채널 5번은 성회 실황을 한 시간으로 편집하여 녹화방송 했습니다. 또한 세 개의 위성채널 이 성회 전체실황을 전세계로 송출했고 지구 전역의 기독 방송들이 이 신호를 수신하여 자신들의 네 트워크를 통해 방송했습니다. 러시아와 러시아어권 유럽지역을 커버하는 러시아 상트 페테르부르크 의 TKV와 성회를 스페인어로 통역하여 자체 네트워크로 스페인어권 국가들에 방송한 "스페인" 등이 이와 같은 방송국들입니다. 또한 미국의 CTN과 "라 패밀리아 네트워크"도 성회실황을 방송했습니 다."라고 했다.
"라틴 아메리카의 TBN도 라틴 아메리카 전역과 북미, 그리고 유럽에까지 성회 실황을 생중계했고 아르헨티나, 볼리비아, 브라질, 엘살바도르, 에쿠아도르, 콜롬비아, 칠레, 코스타리카, 온두라스, 과테 말라, 니카라과의 기독 TV 방송국들도 성회를 방송했습니다."
만민TV 김진홍 국장은 만민 TV또한 인터넷을 통해 모든 성회 실황을 영어, 스페인어, 한국어, 중국 어, 일본어, 러시아어로 방송했다고 말했다.
철저한 경호
매일 밤 한국인들을 보호하기 위해 또한 성회 중 사고 예방을 위해 철저한 경호와 경비가 이루어졌다.
많은 페루인들은 권총을 가지고 있고 그래서 사고를 예방하기 위해 많은 경호원들이 투입됐고 다행 히 어떤 문제도 발생하지 않았다고 한 관계자는 말했다.
대통령의 환영
이재록 박사는 10월 30일 대통령궁에서 알레한드로 톨레도 페루 대통령의 페루 방문에 대한 환영을 받았다.
만민 월드 미션 책임자인 김진홍 국장은 ANS와의 인터뷰에서 "대통령은 인간의 영적인 측면의 중요 성을 말씀하셨습니다. 그에게는 많은 고뇌와 문제들이 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 대통령은 '기술은 급 속히 발달하고 사람들은 살기에 바쁩니다. 사람은 몸만 있는 것이 아니라 영혼도 있습니다.' 라고 말 하였고 대통령께서는 영적인 삶을 사는 사람과 다른 사람들을 영적인 길로 인도하는 분들을 존경한다 고 하셨습니다."고 했다.
" '저는 기도가 필요합니다.' 라고 정확한 영어로 말씀하셨습니다. 대통령께서는 하늘의 지혜와 능력 을 주셔서 이 나라를 잘 다스림으로 이 나라가 발전하도록, 또한 페루 국민들의 화합을 위하여 기도 를 요청하셨습니다. 그리고 세계평화, 자신과 자신의 가족들을 위해서 기도를 요청하셨습니다. 이재 록 박사님은 요청 받으신 대로 기도해주셨고 하나님의 뜻대로 이 나라를 발전시켜 주시라고 기도하셨 습니다."
매일밤 성회에 페루 여당 총재인 로사 그라시엘라 야나리코 후안카 여사가 참석하기도 하였 다. 둘째날 성회가 끝난후 그녀는 ANS와의 인터뷰에서 "주님의 말씀이 이재록 목사님을 통해 선포되 고 수 많은 권능의 역사들이 일어났습니다. 페루는 이런 점에서 큰 축복을 받았습니다. 이런 권능의 역사들은 예수 그리스도의 영광을 드러내는 것이었고 이 점에 대해 저는 매우 행복합니다."라고 말했 다. (사진: 로사 그라시엘라 야나리코 후안카 여사) 사람들이 어떻게 페루를 위해 기도해야 하느냐는 질문에는 "저희는 사람들이 이 나라의 화합과 평화 를 위해 기도하도록 요청합니다. 지난 10년간 페루에는 많은 부정부패가 있었습니다. 그래서 페루 국 민전체가 가장 좋은 길을 갈 수 있도록 우리의 마음들을 변화시켜 달라는 기도가 필요합니다."
국회의원 루이스 헤이젠 페가라는 성경을 손에 들고 말했다. "이렇게 많은 사람들이 믿음과 구원의 소망을 가지고 이러한 성회에 모인 것은 대단한 것이라고 생각합니다."
그는 또 페루에서 일어났었던 폭력사태에 대해서도 말했다. "많은 폭력사태가 있었기 때문에 페루는 사랑과 영적인 변화가 필요하다는 것을 우리 모두가 알고 있습니다. 물론 이것은 전세계적으로 필요 한 일이기도 합니다."
성회 둘째날, 리마에 위치한 믿음의 공동체 교회 목사인 훌리오 로메로 목사는 몇 주전에 같 은 장소에서 있었던 루이스 팔라우의 성회 준비위원이기도 했는데 아랫단으로 간증하기 위해 올라오 는 수 많은 사람들을 바라보며 미소를 짓고 있었다. (사진: 절름발이가 걷고 걷기 시작한 사람들의 휠체어가 줄지어 있는 모습) 그는 말했다. "저는 이렇게 많은 권능의 역사들이 나타나는 것을 보고 놀라지 않을 수 없습니다. 어제 는 성회를 TV로 시청했는데 오늘은 직접 보고 있습니다. 이 성회는 페루 전국민에게 큰 영향을 미칠 것입니다. 그들은 기독문화에 대해 그리고 실질적인 신앙으로서의 기독교에 대해 새로운 시각을 갖 게 될 것입니다."
리마는 인구 8백만 명의, 1535년 스페인의 정복자 프란시스코 피자로에 의해 세워진 역사적인 도시이 다. 페루는 총인구는 약 2천8백만 명이다. '리마' 라는 이름은 노란색 꽃을 의미하는 '아이마라' 어의 '리마-리맥' 혹은 '리맥-후에이타', 혹은 '강사' 혹은 '연사'를 의미하는 '퀘추아'어의 '리맥'이라는 단 어 에서 나온 말이다. 이러한 히스패닉 이전의 역사와의 연관성, 또한 식민지배의 역사와 강한 신앙, 그 리고 항상 회색빛인 하늘색에 녹아 들어있는 현대적인 모습과 즐거운 분위기 등으로 인해 리마는 항 상 왕들의 도시가 될 것이다. 그리고 한국의 선교팀은 이번 성회를 통해 이 왕들의 도시에 만왕의 왕 을 따르는 많은 사람들이 나와지기를 기대한다!
리마와 페루 전체는 새로운 '빛나는 길'을 만나게 될 것이다. 그것은 바로 예수 그리스도와 사랑의 혁 명으로 가는 길이다!

A NEW 'SHINING PATH' FOR PERU ? BUT THIS ONE IS OF LOVE, NOT HATE
Many see the start of a large spiritual revival following extraordinary Korean festival in Lima

LIMA, PERU(ANS) -- For 15 violent years, the Shining Path (Sendero Luminso), the Peruvian Communist guerrilla force, officially the Communist party of Peru, caused havoc in much of Peru.
Founded in 1970 by Abimael Guzman Reynoso as an orthodox Marxist-Leninist offshoot of the Peruvian Communist party, the Shining Path turned to terrorism in 1980 leaving some 75,000 dead, including 30,000 Quechua Christians in the Ayachucho area of the Andes and 800 pastors murdered.
By the mid-1980s it had several thousand guerrillas, largely in rural Peru. The group began urban terrorism in the late 1980s. In 1992 President Alberto Fujimori instituted martial law and the subsequent capture and life sentence of Guzman and the jailing of most the organization's central committee diminished their guerrilla raids, but the group persists and has continued its attacks on a smaller scale.
But now, after three incredible days of a miracle healing crusade where several hundred thousand people gathered in Lima's Downtown Campo de Marte Park (December 2-4) for the outreach led by Dr. Lee Jae-Rock, senior pastor of the 80,000-member Manmin Joong-Ang Church in Seoul, South Korea and supported by more than 100 Koreans who had flown in from Seoul, many see the beginning of a new "shining path" ? this one a revolution of love, not hate!
As cool winds swept through the park each evening, a multi-ethnic cross-section of Peruvian life, which included Mestizos (unmixed Europeans), black, mixed-raced, Indians, as well as a few Japanese and Chinese who now live in Peru, sang along and danced to worship music provided by various talented Peruvian worship groups and then later to the beautifully attired Hallelujah Praise Mission and the Power Worship team from Seoul, South Korea, who had learned all of the songs in Spanish, the language spoken by two-thirds of the Peruvian population. After each sermon, Dr. Lee, who was being translated into English and Spanish, asked people to repent and gives their lives over to Jesus Christ. Then, those who were sick were asked to lay their hands on the part of their body that was unwell and, as he prayed for them, to receive God's healing in the name of Jesus Christ for them.
Among the thousands of healings reported, were literarily hundreds that pushed their wheelchairs on stage and then walked and ran about the stage.
Before each service, a medical table was set up for people who were sick to go and be diagnosed by Korean and Peruvian doctors and nurses and then after being prayed for, if they believed they are healed, they went back so that the medics could check out whether the healing had taken place from a medical perspective. This was sponsored by the interdenominational World Christian Doctors Network (WCDN) which says that it "intends to inquire into the true state of miraculous healings occurring through the prayer of faith around the world by gathering and carefully assessing various evidential material in cooperation."
THE DOVE THAT DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE…
On the final night, just before Dr. Lee got up to preach, as if a foretaste of what was to come as the Holy Spirit descended on so many, a lovely white dove suddenly landed on the platform and, after a while, nestled in front of the podium as the Korean preached. Later, it joined Dr. Lee and it sat on his shoulder as scores had invaded the stage to testify to their healings.
TV COVERAGE
The two TV channels of Pan Americana TV (Channel 5), and Global TV (Channel 13), which had been airing spots about the festival and also a 30 minute program about Dr. Lee's previous crusades in different parts of the world, then helped to extend the meetings across the country
Said Johnny Kim, "Channel 13 broadcast live the whole event each night from 7-10 PM and right after it was over, Channel 5 then aired edited parts in a one-hour program. Also, there were three satellite channels transmitting the whole program to the world and many of Christian communicators around the world distributed these signals after downloading it from the satellites through their networks. They included TKV in St. Petersburg, which covers Russia and the Russian-speaking countries in Europe, and also Spain who translated the preaching into Spanish and covered Spanish-speaking countries through their own network. It also was transmitted by CTN and the La Familia network in the United States.
"The representative of TBN in Latin America also was able to broadcast live the whole event to Latin America, North America and even Europe, as well as Christian TV networks in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, El Salvador, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua."
Kim added that Manmin TV also web cast each night the services in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese French and Russian.
TIGHT SECURITY
There was tight security each night that was there to not only protect the Korean entourage but also the prevent trouble at the event.
"Many people in Peru carry pistols, so the security men were there to make sure there wasn't trouble," said a source. "Fortunately, there weren't any problems!"
PRESIDENTIAL WELCOME
Dr. Lee was welcomed to Peru during a visit he made to see President Alejandro Toledo at the presidential palace (Palacia de Gobierno) on October 30.
Johnny Kim, international director of Manmin World Missions, who attended the meeting, told ANS, "The president mentioned about the significance of the spiritual side of the human being. He seemed to have lots of problems and difficulties. He told us, 'Technology has developed so rapidly; we are too busy to live now. Man consists not only of flesh, but also the spirit.' He then went on to say that he respected the people who are interested in the spiritual life and helped the people to come to that life.
"'I need prayer,' he said in perfect English. The president asked for heavenly wisdom and understanding to govern the country so it can be developed and also for 'the reconciliation of our people here in Peru.' He also asked for prayer for the peoce of the world and for his health and for his family members. So Dr. Lee prayed exactly what he asked and then prayed for God to develop the country according to God's will."
On the stage for the meetings each night was Rosa Graciela Yanarico Huanca, the president of the majority party in Peru. At the end of the second service, she told ANS, "Peru is very blessed to have the presentation of the Word of the Lord by Pastor Lee and also to be able to witness the many miracles we have seen. These miracles are for the glory of Jesus Christ and I am very happy for this." (Pictured: Rosa Graciela Yanarico Huanca).
When asked how people could pray for her country, she replied, "We ask people to pray for unity and peace in our country. For the last ten years, the corruption has been frequent in Peru and I ask for prayer that the Lord would change the hearts for the best of all of the people here."
Congressman Luis Heysen Fegarra, who was holding a Bible, then said, "I think it is wonderful to see this meeting of people with a great lot of faith and a great hope of being saved."
He then spoke about the violence there has been in the country. "Because there has been so much violence here, we know that that Peru needs love and the people need a spiritual conversion. Of course, this is also needed in all parts of the world."
On the second night of the crusade, Pastor Julio Romero, Pastor of the Community of Faith Church in Lima, and the recent Luis Palau festival also in the same park in Lima a few weeks previously, stood smiling as he watched the huge numbers of people who were testifying on-stage to their healing. "I am impressed by the large number of miracles I am watching," he said. "Yesterday, I watched on television and tonight I see it in person. This will have a great impact on the whole population of Peru because they will have another idea of the Christian culture and the Christians as another option of faith."
Lima, which has about 8 million residents, is a historic city that was founded in 1535 by Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro. Peru has a total population of about 28 million. Lima's name comes from the "aymara" word lima-limac or limac-huayta, the name of a yellow flower; or from the Quechua "rimac" meaning "speaker." Because of these links with the pre-Hispanic past, its colonial past and the strong religious faith it gave the city; its modern outlook and its festive nature, which bathes its eternally gray sky in color, Lima, will always be the City of the Kings and the Korean Christians hope that the crusade will now see many in the City of Kings now following the King of Kings!
Lima, as well as the whole of Peru, will surely now have a new "shining path" ? to Jesus Christ, the loving revolutionary!
